It’s funny how things come together to help you make a decision when the time is right.
On a couple of occasions recently I have heard about a company called ‘Who Gives a Crap’ in relation to environmentally friendly toilet paper but as I was buying Aldi’s 9 pack of loo roll that is packaged in paper, I was feeling like that was good as it was eliminating one bit of plastic packaging.
Then a couple of weeks ago I was in Aldi with ‘toilet rolls’ on my shopping list and found the shelf was bare – well, bare of the paper-packaged toilet paper … obviously everyone else was thinking the same as me. So I had a decision to make, plastic packaged toilet roll or go home and investigate the eco-friendly option?
I decided to go home and find out more about Who Gives A Crap.
In brief, they are an Australian company who give a crap! Their toilet paper:
- is made from recycled paper
- doesn’t have any dyes, inks or scents
- is wrapped in paper
- builds toilets – they give 50% of their profits to build toilets in the developing world
What swung it for me was that in order to build toilets for people who need them, they partner with a number of different charities that work under the WASH scheme. WASH stands for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and it’s something that I heard about a few days before in a film about Bill Gates. These 3 things are essential for health and when we’re in the midst of a pandemic it’s particularly relevant. Additionally, one of their partners is WaterAid, a charity that, as a water only drinker, I support. So the decision was made.
There is real personality in their website and it made the purchase of toilet paper feel like something important and fun. What’s more, I’ve set up a subscription so they will automatically send out more toilet paper every few months so I should never be without!
So to end the story, a few days later a HUGE box arrived with 48 brightly packaged loo rolls inside. My toilet roll stand is now anything but boring … and my airing cupboard is stuffed full of loo roll!!
